There are millions of responsible gun owners in this country, including many in my family, who exercise their 2nd Amendment rights for self-defense and sportsmanship. An overwhelming majority of Americans, including a majority of gun owners, support commonsense gun safety laws like background checks that would prevent deadly weapons from falling into the wrong hands, as well as efforts to continue to enforce the laws we already have on the books.
It’s time to take action to curb gun violence in this country. On my very first day in office, I sent a Dear Colleague letter to every one of my colleagues in the 116th United States Congress asking them to join me in passing common sense gun safety legislation.
We must end loopholes in the background checks system, pass a bill to crack down on bump stocks, and enforce the laws we already have on the books. These are commonsense reforms that cannot wait, and I will continue to advocate for these policies.
