Michigan Advance: Stevens travels to Afghanistan and Kuwait over Thanksgiving

U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Rochester Hills) spent the Thanksgiving holiday visiting U.S. troops stationed abroad.

Stevens’ office announced on Monday that the first-term congresswoman had returned from a delegation trip to Afghanistan and Kuwait with other Democratic members of the U.S. House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

While on the trip, Stevens spent the Thanksgiving holiday with troops and “and received in-country updates on critical national security matters,” as well as matters concerning veterans such as health care and transition training, according to Stevens’ office.

“It was an honor to celebrate Thanksgiving with U.S. service members in Afghanistan and Kuwait,” Stevens said in a statement. “Spending this special time of year with brave men and women serving overseas was a humbling and eye-opening experience, and I returned to Michigan with a renewed sense of gratitude for those who have made remarkable sacrifices to defend our nation.”

Joining Stevens on the trip were U.S. Reps. Connor Lamb (D-Pa.), Colin Allred (D-Texas), Lauren Underwood (D-Ill.) and Committee Chair Mark Takano (D-Calif.).

In a secretive trip, President Donald Trump also visited Afghanistan over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, spending 3½ hours in the country, according to the Associated Press.
